Liverpool ‘made late move’ to reunite Arne Slot with £25m Feyenoord ace

Liverpool made a late appeal to try and reunite Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer with new manager Arne Slot, reports in the Netherlands have claimed.

Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager after the latter stood down from his post after eight-and-a-half years in charge, and was quickly linked with bringing a number of Feyenoord players over to Anfield.

No formal moves have materialised for any of Slot’s former stars, though Dutch outlet De Telegraaf allege contact was made between Liverpool and the representatives of 24-year-old Wieffer earlier this week.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, they were met with the news that Wieffer had already agreed to join Brighton & Hove Albion, who are expected to close a €30m (£25.4m) move for the midfielder in the coming days.

Wieffer, who saw an injury cost him a spot in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, rejected a move to Atletico Madrid in January but is now ready to take his career to the next level.

Missing out on Wieffer is a frustrating blow to Liverpool, who remain on the hunt for a new midfielder to fill the void left behind by Thiago Alcantara’s departure.

Defensive midfielder Wataru Endo has even admitted that he hopes to see Liverpool bolster in his own position this summer.

Another Feyenoord player who will not be following Slot to Liverpool this summer is centre-back David Hancko, who recently confessed that he has spoken with the Dutch boss and does not believe the Reds are on the hunt for a new defender.

Goalkeeper Justin Bijlow has been touted as a potential replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher, who is keen to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular starting minutes.
